June 20, 2017 In 1956, the Swedish photographer Christer Strömholm, then thirty-eight years old, placed his bags in a seedy hotel of the Place Blanche, where the clientele was essentially composed of transexuals. He adopted the nocturnal life of his neighbors and found a way to share their intimacy. Les Nuits de Place Blanche immerses the reader in Parisian nightlife of the 50s and 60s, more specifically in the transsexual community in the neighborhood near Pigalle Square. Christer Strömholm , considered the father of Swedish contemporary photography, portrayed the characters in an intimate and exuberant way, either in the street or in the hotel rooms they were living. CHR: I first came to Place Blanche in 1947. Place Blanche became very important – ’the transsexuals’ is an important part of my photographic activities and my relation to the pictures I take. Then there is a standpoint to that way of living, as a prostitute.
